ABSTRACT
Alongside the recent growth of the CubeSat market, the demand for low-cost, high-performing CubeSat propulsion systems is continuously increasing. As such, this paper presents the design of a monopropellant propulsion system that utilizes a unique propellant pressurization method, specifically for CubeSats applications. This innovative design features a self-pressurizing pressurant pressurization (SPPP) system to minimize complexity and thereby reduce both the cost and mass of the system. Utilizing high vapor pressure, self-pressurizing liquid as a pressurant for the propellant pressurization system, this system eliminates the need for a separate pressurant tank and pressure controlling devices. For high modular design, all subsystems—including a thruster, a propellant tank, valves, supporting frames, and other auxiliary components—are designed to fit into a 2U volume. The presented design is expected to provide a low-cost and reliable propulsion solution for CubeSats.
